Later this month (April 21), the Ruff Ryders are reuniting in their native of New York City. While DMX, Swizz Beatz, Eve, and The LOX have always been the flagship artists within the R.R. management and label, the Ryders have long boasted a deep roster of talent. At times, names like Cassidy, Jin, and Yung Won were just some of the names tied in. Drag-On is another, that many folks remember from the 1999-2000 boom of the squad.
From the Bronx, Drag-On released Opposite Of H20 through Ruff Ryders/Interscope in March of 2000. More than half of that album was produced by Swizz Beatz. The crew showed out on the album, as did Def Jam’s Case and C-N-N’s Capone. While Drag-On appeared in the shadows of his label-mates, his album debuted at #5 and eventually went gold (a claim many great MCs cannot make). Moreover, the hit video single “Spit These Bars” was a great build-out on the album, featuring Swizz. There were bike and 4-wheeler stunts, and catchy raps over a trademark Ruff Ryders track (from P.Killer).
Almost on the seventh anniversary of Opposite…, Drag-On returns with Barz On Fire. The 13 track mixtape (hosted by DJ Get It Rite) is a fresh offering of where Drag-On is, following 2007’s Hood Environment. Cassidy is the lone R.R. affiliate that makes a vocal appearance, as Drag aims to put the attention largely on his lyrics.
Highlights include the flow on “N.R.G.,” and the bully-mouth delivery on opener “Choke ‘Em.” On second single, “Foot On They Neck,” Drag-On reminds people that his name stays on minds, and he’s the originator of “bar” chatter. He does that even more so on following song “No Matter Who.”
The project features also industry beats by Kanye West/Desiigner, Meek Mill, and others.
